Receding gums: treatment and causes

Receding gums: treatment and causes

What are gums?

The gums are also called gingiva, they are the part of the soft tissue surrounding our teeth, covering their roots and protecting them from germs and injuries. Healthy gums are pink, and they have a limited sensibility to pain. If your gums or sensitivity change, those are early signs of gum inflammation or gingivitis.

What are receding gums?

Receding gums happens when a person experiences a loss of tissue in the gum. It will expose the fragile roots of the teeth to bacteria and plaque.

What are causing receding gums?

They are several factors that can cause your gums to recede:

  • Hormonal changes: Female hormones become more sensitive during puberty, pregnancy, menstruation, and menopause and, can make gums recess.
  •  Periodontal disease: These are bacterial gum infections that destroy gum tissue.
  • Aggressive tooth brushing: If you brush your teeth too hard and in a back-and-forth motion it will increase your chances of losing the gums tissue.
  • Piercing of the lip or tongue: Jewelry can irritate and damage the gums.
  • Tobacco: Using tobacco products will leave a sticky plaque and cause gum recession.

How to know if you have receding gums?

Gums recede slowly and it might take years. Always keep an eye and check if:

- you are seeing the roots of your teeth,
- you are having loose teeth.
- your teeth look longer than usual.

Are receding gums bad?

Having receding gums will expose the roots of the teeth and increase plaque, germs, and tartar to build-up. Teeth will become more sensitive and can lead to diseases or even tooth loss if it is left untreated.
